Runkelstein Castle

Medieval dream-castle near Bozen

Already the ascent to Runkelstein Castle is a small adventure and for high-heel-bearers it isn’t a really amusement. But they walk on historic ground: the paving stones and the walls derive from ancient times.

The castle was built in 13th century. 700 years ago, the place where the castle stands even today, was an important place to control the trading between Bozen and Sarntal Valley. In the 14th century the brothers Franz and Niklaus Vintler - two merchants from Bozen - bought the castle. To demonstrate their richness and to appeal to the nobility, they commissioned to paint frescos.

Today they are the biggest and best conserved frescos of the Middle Age. The frescos show scenes from everyday life of then, tournaments and hunts. No wonder that the castle is also called "fresco-castle".

In the castle courtyard in summer are taking place a lot of concerts and theater-performances. Visiting the castle is a must for every culture-lover, who spend his holidays in Southern South Tyrol!
