Hiking in Southern South Tyrol

To the ice-holes in Eppan

An excursion for the whole family is the one to the ice-holes near Eppan in Southern South Tyrol. Between steep rocks even in high summer swells iced-water. You and your explorer-kids will be amazed.

The question is: how it is possible that on an altitude of 500 m above sea level grows alpine roses and that iced air blows through chinks and that in consequence you have to put on a jacket also in summer?

The explanation: the freezing air results from air circulation in the inside of the rocks. Warm air, which enters above, becomes colder in the inside and exits below with a temperature of 0-5° C.

The excursion

Starting in the center of St. Michaels you walk to Gleifkirch church and hike into the forests of Eppan. After half an hour you arrive at the ice-holes and your explorer-children will be entertained revealing the secrets of the freezing air!
